Kissimmee, FL

So Near to Central Florida's Activities and Attractions

Kissimmee, Florida (pronounced kiss’-im-ee) was once, in the early 1800’s, just a trading post located on the northern shore of Lake Tohopekaliga (locals call this Lake Toho). In 1884, the town became incorporated. Around that small trading post has grown a city based on both tourism and agriculture.

Kissimmee is located only 22 miles from Orlando International Airport, the nearest large airport, but it does have an airport of its own to support small aircraft such as private planes. Only 60 miles of travel along the scenic route of US 192 from Kissimmee brings you to the sunny Florida beaches around Melbourne Beach, Florida.

Kissimmee is the county seat of Osceola County, Florida and in the year 2000 U.S. Census had a population of 47,814 permanent residents. In tourist season, from early fall into late spring, the population grows somewhat, but Kissimmee’s tourism tends to be short-term tourist rather than a large population of “snow birds”. The reason for this is that Kissimmee is located near several major attractions, but has very affordable lodging available compared to some of the premier hotels located at the attractions.

US 192 is “the main drag” through Kissimmee, made up of small shops for browsing and a carnival-like atmosphere, you will find a small amusement park, arcades, casual dining and a fun atmosphere every night. This area of Kissimmee is known as “Old Town”. Friday and Saturday nights even the locals from surrounding cities drive to Kissimmee to enjoy the fun on this strip of US 192. Classic and antique car enthusiasts will often be seen ‘cruising Old Town’ and most weekend evenings quite a few unique autos can be spotted.

Dining in the area covers the full spectrum. From the most casual to cafes with partial outdoor seating, to elegant dining, you can find whatever you want in Kissimmee. The majority of dining is very casual and even in mid-scale restaurants it is not uncommon to see customers in shorts and “slaps” as the locals call flip-flops or thong shoes.

Located only 23 miles from Disney World and the Epcot Center, the drive time to these attractions is short and easy. Mickey Mouse and all the Disney characters can be seen at Disney World along with fun rides. Epcot Center provides a more scientific experience but includes shows, rides, and lots of fun. Many people who visit the attractions at Disney choose to stay in Kissimmee.

With so many activities to choose from, Kissimmee makes the perfect vacation destination. Close to Orlando’s many attractions as well as having many of its own, and beaches in easy driving distance for a day trip, Kissimmee can make for a very affordable vacation that brings in many of the key pleasures of Florida.

Fishing, golfing, amusements, camping and RV camping are available. Hotels range from the lower to mid-priced to a few top end hotels. Short term seasonal apartments or condos can be leased for the longer stay. The Parks and Recreation Department of Kissimmee offers several interesting programs including nursery garden visits to view plants, Imagination Station for children to play, swimming and other fun.

Kissimmee is just about as perfectly in the center of Central Florida as you can get! That means that most coastal hurricanes do not threaten or damage Kissimmee significantly. Kissimmee has a small town atmosphere, yet it provides a great selection of places to visit in the city and nearby. Kissimmee is not only a great vacation spot but a nice place to live.
