Orlando, FL

Central Florida Hub for Activities and Attractions

Orlando, Florida is by far the largest city in the Central Florida region. Located in Orange County, Orlando lies about 50 miles inland from the beaches at Cape Canaveral and Cocoa Beach. The Orlando 2000 U.S. Census reports 185,915 permanent residents with the Greater Orlando Metro region housing over 1.5 million permanent residents. A large number of winter residents increase the number during “snow bird season”. Tourism is a big part of the Orlando economy, but technology, professional services and agriculture have large roles as well. Orlando is home to the Orlando Magic professional basketball team.

If you wish to fly into Orlando, you will fly into Orlando International Airport, on the south edge of the city. Orlando Executive Airport provides less busy air access for private aircraft. This airport supports jets, and at times a major star will be seen arriving in their personal jet. Access by train is also available since Orlando is about 10 miles from the Amtrak station in Sanford. Many snowbirds like to arrive aboard the Auto Train which ships your automobile on the same train you travel.

Lodging ranges from camping and RV parking to extremely upscale hotels/resorts, and everything in between. Affordable lodging can be located or you can stay in one of the truly unique exquisite resorts. Orlando is home to a Peabody Hotel and you can view for free the daily display of the famous Peabody ducks crossing the street to swim in Lake Eola.

The dining experiences in Orlando are exceptionally broad. Fast food, small casual dining, and home style restaurants are common. Ethnic food from every land can be obtained or you can select upscale, elegant dining in 5-star restaurants. Whatever you want for your dining pleasure, it can be located while in Orlando.

Orlando has great shopping and many locals from the smaller surrounding areas travel to Orlando just for the shopping. There are several malls, quaint little shops on the streets downtown and tourist shops. Ethnic shops, found no where else in the area in such abundance, make stopping in the small shops great fun!

The Church Street area of downtown Orlando reflects the Orlando of the past. Original buildings, once train stations, and warehouses have been converted into an area several blocks wide and about ½ mile long just packed with shopping, adventures, dining, unique bars and nightclubs, and provide a fun gathering place for locals and tourists alike.

The Orlando Centraplex consists of five venues for sports and cultural events: TD Waterhouse Centre, Bob Carr Performing Arts Center, Florida Citrus Bowl, Tinker Field and Expo Centre. Concerts, Broadway shows, theater and cultural events keep the activities calendar very busy; in addition to the many sports events schedule.

Theme park attractions in the Orlando area include Disney World’s Park complex that boast The Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Pleasure Island, Downtown Disney, Disney’s MGM Studio and more. You can also visit Universal Studios Orlando, Sea World Orlando, Discovery Cove, Islands of Adventure and Wet 'n Wild, to name a few of the largest. Many offer destination vacations where you can stay in hotels and resorts on the park property.

Other activities in Orlando include golfing, fishing, hot air balloon rides, tours of Leu Gardens for a peaceful vision of tropical paradise, or visits to Fort Christmas museum, just east of the main area of Orlando. Take an airboat ride in one of the nearby rivers - it's quite an experience if you’ve never been on an airboat. Take a day trip from Orlando to the beaches in less than an hour’s drive, or take a tour of Kennedy Space Center while you’re in the area. Whatever you do in Orlando, you may complain of being tired or sunburned, but never will you complain of being bored!
