Largo, FL

Activities and Attractions

Largo, Florida, located in Pinellas County, is south of Clearwater and north of St. Petersburg. Largo is a relatively small city in area, consisting of only 16.69 square miles, but is rich in spirit and culture. The Largo Cultural Center, one of the area’s most highly respected facilities, features live performers, shows, and banquets. Another main attraction is the Largo Central Park, a 70-acre park featuring the Rainbow Rotary Playground - one of the only playgrounds in the area that is completely accessible to disabled users.

Largo's population for the year 2000 census was 70,214 Largo residents, not bad for a community that began life as a train depot and citrus grove. Today Largo is a city composed mostly of residential developments brought about by demand for housing near the coastal areas of Florida and the failure of the citrus industry over many years.

A visit to Largo should include the Florida Botanical Gardens. Located in the heart of Largo, it features 182 acres of nature, history, and art. Visitors can embark on a guided tour through the park and take in all the horticulture and wildlife.

Heritage Village, another popular Largo destination, is a 21-acre, open-air historical village and museum. Heritage Village is the location of 28 of Pinellas County’s most historical structures, some dating to the mid and late 19th Century. The Pinellas County Historical Museum and the Daniel McMullen Home For The Fiber Arts are also to be enjoyed on your tour of Heritage Village.

Golfing vacations are popular in this part of Florida and visitors can try the links at Largo’s Bardmoor Golf and Tennis Club. Bardmoor’s is open to the public and has played host to the nationally televised JC Penney Classic. Also in Largo is the beautiful Bayou Golf Club along with many more courses, both public and private.

For the beachgoers, Largo is conveniently located near some of Florida’s finest sandy beaches including Clearwater Beach. Caladesi Island and Honeymoon Island State Park are short drives from Largo and are not to be missed. For theme park lovers, it’s only a short ride to Tampa’s Busch Gardens and Adventure Island. There are two airports near Largo - Tampa International and St. Petersburg-Clearwater International. Orlando International is approximately 90 miles away.
